The Shiling Pearl (噬灵珠) treasure enables two predatory mechanics that define aggressive playstyles: soul search (搜魂) for knowledge extraction and theft (妙手空空 / 神偷) for item acquisition. Both consume spirit stones for activation and both carry social consequences — affinity loss, prestige reduction, and potential quest lockouts. This guide teaches when to steal, what to target, and how to manage reputation across the Luocha Island arc.

Soul Search Mechanics

After defeating eligible NPCs or bosses, activate soul search through the pearl interface (spending spirit stones):

• Extracts gongfa and spells directly into your technique collection — bypassing sect favor and quest requirements
• Reveals hidden information: technique locations, secret realm coordinates, NPC background data
• Best targets: Liu Bohu (Golden Spirit Swift Sky Art), Foundation cultivators in Deacon Hall quests, story bosses with Xuan-grade manuals

Soul search does not steal equipment — only knowledge. The target must be defeated or surrendered first. F8 save before soul search on quest-critical NPCs in case the interaction triggers unexpected hostility.

Theft Mechanics

Divine Thief (神偷) talent at Chaos Pearl activation enhances theft capabilities. Theft steals equipment, pills, and treasures from NPCs — sometimes without lethal combat when stealth and Speed builds align.

• Best theft targets: Jiang Peipei armor (Chapter 1/3), merchant stockpiles, NPC equipment visible in inspect menus
• Strongest synergy: Earth builds with Divine Thief for armor acceleration
• Highest risk: Stealing from quest-critical NPCs on Hell difficulty

Reputation and Prestige Management

Every soul search and theft degrades NPC affinity and prestige. Penalties scale with difficulty:

• Normal: Manageable — occasional theft from hostile NPCs carries light penalties
• Hard: Repeated theft from neutral characters triggers hostility and bounty events
• Hell: Theft from quest-critical NPCs can permanently break story branches

1. Liu Bohu: Soul search Golden Spirit Swift Sky Art — highest-value Xuan technique in Chapter 2
2. Jiang Peipei: Steal armor set — best early-to-mid armor for Earth builds
3. Deacon Hall quest enemies: Soul search for element-matching Xuan techniques
4. Foundation cultivators on overworld: Farm technique variety during travel
5. Story bosses: Always soul search before leaving the area

Spirit Stone Budget for Pearl Users

Soul search and theft consume spirit stones every activation. Budget income from combat, quests, and bounty boards toward pearl operations:

• Chapter 2: Reserve stones for Liu Bohu soul search and one theft attempt on Jiang Peipei if not already done in Chapter 1
• Chapter 3: Deacon Hall soul searches on elite quest enemies — save before accepting quests, soul search every profitable target
• Late game: Balance stone spending between pearl activation and Qian Kun Sword burst charges

No-Theft Challenge Runs

Some achievements may require completing segments without theft or soul search. For no-theft runs on Shennong Cauldron or disciplined pearl playthroughs:

• Prioritize NPC learning and gift-giving for technique access instead of soul search
• Buy techniques from black markets and traveling merchants in Ping'an City and Liuyun City
• Accept slower Xuan-grade acquisition — Deacon Hall and sect libraries become primary sources
• Track which achievements specify no-theft constraints in the Steam achievement description before committing

No-theft runs pair naturally with Shennong Cauldron but are viable on pearl if you resist the temptation after Chapter 2.
